Monday, January 23, at 7:30pm – SAR 104

Want to help decrease life threatening diseases in under resourced
communities? Would you like to travel to beautiful Central America to
celebrate the end of finals week? Join Boston University’s Public
Health Brigade to Honduras to help families improve their home
infrastructure to combat diseases. During the one-week brigade,
students have the opportunity to work side-by-side with families to
build eco-stoves, latrines, concrete floors, and water storage units.
Stop by our info session and join us on our brigade this May. Speaking
Spanish is not mandatory and translators will be provided during brigade.
If you cannot attend this meeting but would still like to learn about
the program, please contact us at publichealthbrigade.bu@gmail.com
<mailto:publichealthbrigade.bu@gmail.com>

Public Health Brigades is a program of the international nonprofit,
Global Brigades <http://www.globalbrigades.org/>, the world’s largest
student-led global health and sustainable development organization.
In 2010, more than 4,000 volunteers from 160 GB university chapters in
North America and Europe traveled to provide health and economic
development solutions to more than 50,000 beneficiaries through our
teams in Panama and Honduras.

To All,

I wanted to thank everyone involved for their support and time working with the Vikramasila Foundation’s “Dental Hygiene and Nutritional Health Campaign”. The campaign was incredibly successful. With the money donated through BU and private sponsors we were able to provide each student at the Pema Ts’al School mouthwash, floss, toothpaste, and a toothbrush with more supplies in storage to last approximately for another 6-9 months. A dentist came to the school and also assessed the condition of the children’s teeth. The Vikramasila Foundation, through private sponsors, is providing the money for dental cleaning, tooth extractions, and fluoride treatments for the children at a discounted rate which will ultimately be free to the students. Each student was also given a nutritional education packet and dental health brochures along with a lecture with the local dentist.

I thank everyone for their contributions, especially the members of UPHA who helped organize the fundraising.

Best,
Chloe Sakow

Over the past several decades, enthusiasm for early diagnosis has grown, engaging many physicians in a systematic search for abnormalities in people who are well. While most consider only the potential benefits, in this talk Dr. Welch exposes the often-ignored harm: over-diagnosis.

The William J. Bicknell Lectureship in Public Health at the Boston University School of Public Health is named in honor of William J. Bicknell, chair emeritus and professor of international health at Boston University School of Public Health and professor of sociomedical sciences and community medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.
