Volunteering: BU Student Health Ambassador

March 16, 2009
Greetings from Student Health Services…

I’m writing to make you aware of a new format for the Student Health Ambassadors starting in the fall.  We have created a two course, one credit PDP series to train students in health issues that are relevant to college-age people in the first semester and then on how to deliver messages relating to health in the second semester.  The courses will prepare students to act as peer educators in a University setting.  For those who apply for SHA positions next year, these courses will be required.  Going forward, students who have completed the courses will be eligible to apply as an Health Ambassador.  Students who can demonstrate similar experiences (ex. participating in Peer Health Exchange) will also be eligible to apply.

The class both semesters will be offered on Wednesdays from 11-12:30 at the Fitness and Recreation Center.  The course numbers are PDP HE 100 and 200 respectively.

The purposes of the Student Health Ambassador group are as follows…

  • To increase student engagement in the health care process and delivery system at BU.
  • To capitalize on peer interactions to improve dissemination of health information and campus health.
  • To provide a positive “real life” educational experience for Ambassadors around personal and public health.

This is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable skills for now and later in life.  The series is particularly relevant to those with interest in public health, medical fields and future educators.

There will be two informational sessions about the Student Health Ambassadors and the course series on March 31 and April 2 at Student Health Services at 7:30pm.  SHS is located at 881 Commonwealth Ave, West Entrance.

Thanks!
